Plants In Your Garden That Are Natural Pest Repellants

Mother Nature has a wonderful way of balancing things out. And as avid, capable gardeners, we can take advantage of some of the natural balancing tools she has given us.

Take mosquitoes for instance. Anyone who is driven inside regularly at twilight, or has been unable to enjoy a nice midnight barbecue, swim, or family gathering in the garden because they’re eaten alive by these pesky little biters will be happy to know: There are several natural ways you can keep them away from your outdoor living spaces. And these natural ways of course involve putting in certain types of plants, which tend to be natural pest repellants.

Now these plants will help keep mosquitoes away from your favorite outdoor living areas and garden spaces of course, but they’re also often quite useful for keeping away certain pests that might destroy some of your favorite flowers and bushes too. So consider planting these throughout your yard and garden freely, and you might just be amazed at how much better your plants thrive… in addition to how much more you can enjoy your outdoor garden spaces in the evening and night time.

Garlic - Garlic is an excellent plant to use for a variety of pest repellant reasons. It’s known to help repell all sorts of bugs and invaders which can destroy favorite plantings such as roses, plus it will help keep the mosquitoes and other human annoyances at bay too. Plant garlic liberally throughout the yard and garden area and you’ll be thrilled with the results.

If you don’t want to grow garlic, an alternative that tends to work ok is garlic chives.

Onions - Onions also have a pugnent smell which helps deter many common pests and annoyances commonly found outdoors. If you can’t handle the smell of garlic or you’re unable to plant it for some reason, onions usually make a nice alternative. There are also a variety of types which can be planted too.

Mint - Mint is another natural pest repellant that’s very easy to grow and will spread out on it’s own naturally. This is an invasive plant though, so it’s not always wise to let it spread freely.

Lemon Balm - Lemon Balm is a type of mint which has a nice lemon smell to it. This is one of the best deterrants for mosquitoes particularly, and you can even break off the leaves and rub them onto your skin as a natural personal pest repellant. Lemon balm is also a fast grower, and it can be invasive as well, so you’ll want to be careful with where you choose to plant it.

Many other types of plants and herbs are excellent natural pest repellants too. In general, anything which has a strong odor naturally tends to work. Lemon scented herbs and plants seem to work the best though, and they’re also much more pleasing to humans than other pugnent plants may be.
