Hydrophobic Soil: Why Water Runs Straight Off and How to Fix It

You water. The water beads on the surface like it’s hit a raincoat, pools, then slides away — and ten minutes later the soil underneath is powder-dry. That’s hydrophobic (water-repellent) soil, one of the most common and least diagnosed problems in Australian gardens. Until you fix the repellence, no amount of extra watering helps — the water isn’t going in.

The ten-second test

Scrape any mulch aside and pour a cup of water on the bare soil. Sinks in within a few seconds: fine. Sits in a bead, or skates across the surface before disappearing sideways: hydrophobic. In lawns, the same problem hides behind a different name — the “dry patch” that stays brown no matter the sprinkler schedule (it’s a classic brown-patch cause). In pots, it’s the potting mix that’s shrunk from the pot walls so water races down the gap and out the bottom, wetting nothing on the way.

Why soil does this — especially ours

As organic matter (leaf litter, old roots, aging potting-mix components) breaks down, it leaves waxy residues that coat soil particles. Coated particles repel water instead of drawing it in. Sandy soils suffer worst because sand grains have little surface area, so a small amount of wax coats them completely — which is why the problem is famous across Australia’s sand belts (Perth gardeners know it intimately) and near-universal in old potting mix. Heat and long dry spells entrench it: the drier the wax gets, the harder it repels, which is why dry patch peaks in summer exactly when water matters most.

The fix, in order

1. Break the surface tension: a soil wetting agent. Wetting agents (soil wetters) are surfactants — molecules that let water grip the waxy coating and soak in rather than bead off. Apply per the pack directions and water in well; the first proper application often transforms a bed or lawn patch in one session. Two honest caveats: they manage repellence rather than cure it, so expect to reapply each season on sandy ground per the label; and they are the one genuinely product-shaped answer in this article because nothing home-made performs the same job as reliably.

2. Rewet the profile slowly. After treating, one long slow soak beats three fast ones — repellent soil re-wets gradually. For pots far gone, submerge the whole pot in a tub of water until bubbles stop; it’s the only way to rewet a shrunken root ball evenly.

3. Rebuild the soil so it happens less. Long-term, repellence retreats as soil improves: dig through compost and well-rotted organic matter (in sand, clay-based amendments help hold both water and nutrients), keep the surface mulched so it never bakes into a crust, and keep some moisture in the profile through summer — deep, occasional watering maintains the beachhead the wetting agent won. In pots, the honest fix for old collapsed mix is fresh mix; potting media have a working life, and fighting expired mix costs more than replacing it.

How you know it’s fixed

The cup test passes; the screwdriver test after watering (from the watering guide) finds moisture at depth; lawns green evenly instead of in territories; and plants that yellowed from phantom “drought despite watering” pick up — if they don’t, run the yellow-leaf diagnostic, because you may have been treating the wrong cause.

Hydrophobic soil is the great imposter: it wears drought’s costume while wasting every litre you apply. Ten seconds with a cup of water unmasks it, and one seasonal habit keeps it managed.

Vegetables That Actually Work in Pots (It’s Mostly About Pot Size)

Container vegetable growing fails in Australia for one main reason, and it isn’t variety choice or fertiliser or love. It’s small pots. A small pot in Australian sun is an oven with a plant in it: the root zone swings hot by day and the whole thing dries out by lunchtime, and no crop performs with cooked, thirsty roots. Choose the crop to fit the pot you can offer — or better, size the pot to the crop — and container growing suddenly works the way the pictures promised.

The honest pot-size table

Practical minimums per plant — bigger is always better, and these assume a quality potting mix (never garden soil, which compacts and drains badly in containers):

  • Herbs (basil, parsley, chives, mint): 20 cm pot each; mint always alone, it’s a thug.
  • Salad greens (lettuce, rocket, spinach, spring onions): anything 15–20 cm deep — a trough or foam box works; these are the shallow-rooted exception that forgives small containers.
  • Cherry tomato: 40 cm / roughly 30 L minimum, plus a stake. The single most popular balcony crop and the most commonly under-potted.
  • Full-size tomato, capsicum, chilli, eggplant: 40–50 cm pot; chilli is the most forgiving of the four.
  • Zucchini: 50 cm+ tub, and accept it will still dominate.
  • Bush beans: a 30 cm pot takes several plants; climbing beans want a deeper tub plus something to climb.
  • Carrots, beetroot, radish: depth over width — 30 cm+ deep for carrots (choose shorter round varieties in pots), radish happy in 20 cm.
  • Dwarf citrus: half-wine-barrel scale, 50 cm+ — a long-term resident, covered separately soon.

If a crop’s minimum is bigger than your space allows, grow something else. A thriving pot of herbs beats a suffering tomato every time.

Why the size rule dominates here

Volume is buffer. Soil mass evens out temperature swings and holds a day’s water; a big pot rides out a 35-degree afternoon that would wilt the same plant in a small one. Practical corollaries: light-coloured pots beat dark ones in full sun; grouped pots shade each other’s root zones; mulch on top of the mix isn’t optional in summer; and watering runs on the check-don’t-schedule method in the watering guide, which for small pots in January means checking daily.

Matching crops to your light

Pots can’t fix aspect. Fruiting crops — tomatoes, capsicum, zucchini, beans — want the sunniest position you have, which in the southern hemisphere means north-facing (here’s the aspect guide — and yes, most international advice has it backwards for us). Leafy greens and many herbs are the shade-tolerant team, and in a Queensland summer they actually prefer protection from brutal afternoon sun. East-facing morning sun suits almost everything soft.

Timing still applies in a pot

A pot doesn’t exempt you from the calendar — a balcony tomato planted in October hits the same December wall as one in the ground. Plant container crops in the same windows as garden crops: the subtropical month-by-month calendar applies pot-for-pot, with one bonus — pots are movable, so you can chase winter sun and dodge summer hail in a way no garden bed can.
