Find your aspect in ten seconds: open the compass app, stand facing out over the railing, read the bearing. Roughly 315°–45° is north-facing, 45°–135° east, 135°–225° south, 225°–315° west.

North-facing: the jackpot

Refinements that change the picture

Balcony depth and the roof above shift everything: a deep roofed balcony pushes direct sun toward the outer rail only, while the winter-low sun penetrates furthest on northern aspects. Neighbouring buildings can delete hours of theoretical sun — the only reliable audit is checking the balcony at 9am, noon and 3pm on a day you’re home, once in summer and once in winter if you can. Weight. Wet soil is heavy — a large pot can weigh as much as a person. Yellow Leaves: A Practical Diagnosis Guide for Australian Gardens

“Yellow leaves” is the garden’s check-engine light: it tells you something’s wrong and nothing about what. The pattern of the yellowing, though, narrows it fast. Four questions get you from panic to probable cause — and they matter, because the two most common causes (too much water, too little water) get opposite treatments.

1. Which leaves — old or new? Plants ration nutrients. Sticky leaves, sooty black film, ants running trade routes. Sap-suckers: aphids (clustered on soft new tips), scale (small fixed bumps on stems and leaf undersides) or mealybugs (white cottony tufts in leaf joints). The stickiness is honeydew; the black is a mould growing on it; the ants are farming the insects for it. Manage the sap-sucker and the rest resolves.

Fruit that looks fine, then rots from the inside with maggots. Fruit fly — in most of eastern Australia, Queensland fruit fly. The eggs go in through a sting you can barely see; by the time fruit drops it’s too late for that fruit. Here’s the answer up front: if your zucchini is flowering its head off but producing nothing, it’s almost always because the early flowers are all male, or because no pollinator is moving pollen to the female flowers. Both are normal, neither means a sick plant, and you can fix the second one yourself tomorrow morning with a cotton bud.

Male and female: the ID that explains everything

Zucchini (like all the pumpkin family) puts separate male and female flowers on the same plant.

  • Male flowers sit on a long, thin, plain stem. They appear first — often for a week or two before any females — and they exist purely to supply pollen. They bloom, they drop, they litter the ground. This stage fools everyone into thinking the plant is “dropping fruit”. It isn’t; there was never fruit to drop.
  • Female flowers are unmistakable once you look: behind the petals sits a miniature zucchini. That baby fruit only grows if the flower gets pollinated; if it doesn’t, it yellows, shrivels from the flower end and drops off.

So walk out and look at what you actually have. All long-stemmed flowers and no baby fruits behind any of them? You’re in the normal males-first stage — wait a week, keep the plant growing well, and females will come. Baby fruits that appear but then yellow and rot at the tip while small? That’s failed pollination, and it’s the fixable one.

The two-minute hand pollination

Do this in the morning, when flowers are open and pollen is fresh:

  1. Pick a male flower (long plain stem), or just fold its petals back on the plant.
  2. Expose the central pollen-bearing anther.
  3. Find an open female flower (baby fruit behind it).
  4. Brush the male anther gently onto the centre of the female flower — direct contact, or transfer with a small dry brush or cotton bud. One male can service several females.

Two look-alikes are worth ruling out. And the male flowers you’ll now have in surplus? They’re edible — battered and fried they’re arguably better than the zucchini.

Growing Tomatoes in Queensland: Timing Beats Everything

Down south, tomatoes are the classic spring crop — plant after the last frost, harvest through summer. Follow that advice in Queensland and you’ll do everything right and still lose: plants that romp along until December, then split fruit, drop flowers in the heat, collapse with fungal problems in the wet, and hand what’s left to fruit fly. In Queensland, the tomato is an autumn and winter crop. Get the timing right and everything else about growing them gets easier.

The two windows

Window one: autumn (roughly February to April). Plant as the worst summer humidity breaks. Plants establish in warm soil, flower and set fruit through the mild, drier months, and produce across winter into spring in frost-free areas. This is the main event for coastal Queensland — pest pressure and disease drop exactly as your plants hit their productive stretch.

Window two: late winter (roughly August to early September). The second chance. Planted now, tomatoes fruit in late spring, mostly ahead of the December humidity wall and ahead of the worst fruit fly months. This window is tighter — every week of delay pushes fruiting deeper into trouble — so early August beats late September comfortably.

The window to refuse: October–November. It feels right, garden centres are full of seedlings, and it’s how southern calendars are written. But count forward: flowers and ripening fruit land in December–February, which is peak humidity, peak storm damage and peak Queensland fruit fly, all at once. Some years you get lucky. Most years the crop feeds the flies.

Inland and elevated gardeners with real frost should shift toward the southern pattern — later winter planting after frost risk, and autumn plantings that finish before it. Timing is climate, not postcode.

Why the timing matters this much

Three Queensland realities gang up on mistimed tomatoes:

  1. Fruit fly. Queensland fruit fly stings developing fruit and its larvae ruin it from inside. Pressure is lowest roughly May through September — cool nights limit breeding — and highest in the warm wet months. Fruit that ripens in winter largely escapes; fruit that ripens in January is a target.   2. Heat and fruit set. Very hot spells interfere with pollination and fruit set — flowers simply drop. Cooler-season flowering avoids the problem instead of fighting it.
  3. Humidity and disease. Wet leaves in warm nights are exactly what fungal and bacterial problems want. The dry-season grower waters at the base in the morning and mostly opts out of that fight.

Growing them well inside the window

The unglamorous fundamentals do the rest. Full sun (winter sun especially — plant where north-facing light lasts all day). Deep, rich soil or a genuinely large pot. Stake or cage at planting time, not after they sprawl. Water deeply and consistently at the base — irregular watering is the main cause of split fruit and blossom-end problems. Feed when flowering starts. Pick from the first blush of colour and ripen fruit on the bench if anything is attacking ripe fruit outside.

Variety-wise, cherry and small-fruited types are the forgiving choice in Queensland: faster to fruit, less prone to splitting, and less attractive time-on-the-vine for pests. Grafted or vigorous hybrids earn their price in the autumn window; heirloom beefsteaks are a project for the confident.

What to Plant Now in Subtropical Australia: A Month-by-Month Calendar

In subtropical Australia — Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, and coastal Queensland down into northern NSW — the vegetable year is upside down compared with the calendars in most gardening books. Our hardest season is not winter; it’s the wet, humid heart of summer. The best planting happens in autumn and again in late winter, and a subtropical winter is a genuine growing season, not a rest.

This calendar is written for the subtropics. Temperate gardeners (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide) should shift summer-crop planting later and winter planting earlier; tropical gardeners (FNQ, NT) largely swap “summer” for “wet season” and do their main growing in the dry. Where your microclimate differs — a frosty inland valley, a warm coastal strip — trust your local frost dates over any calendar, this one included.

The two big windows

Autumn (March–May). Soil is still warm, humidity and storm pressure fall away, and pest pressure drops with them. This is the moment for the crops that struggle in the wet heat: tomatoes, capsicum, beans, brassicas as the nights cool, carrots, beetroot, lettuce that won’t bolt. Most of the year’s food comes from what goes in now.

Late winter to early spring (August–September). The second chance. Warm-season crops sown now fruit in late spring before the worst humidity and before fruit fly pressure peaks in the wet months. Month by month

Treat each entry as a window, not a deadline — local guides differ by a few weeks either side, and elevation or frost shifts things.

  • September: last of the late-winter window. Beans, sweet corn, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes (early in the month), capsicum, basil, and quick salad greens before the heat. If zucchini set flowers but no fruit later on, that’s usually pollination, not disease.
  • October: heat-lovers only — eggplant, chilli, sweet potato, pumpkin family. Salad greens move to part shade.
  • November–January: the survival months. Plant the tropical-adapted crops that enjoy the wet heat: snake beans, kangkong, Ceylon spinach, sweet potato, ginger and turmeric. This is a poor window for tomatoes and European salads, and an excellent one for building soil and keeping mulch up to everything. Watering technique matters most now — deep and early.
  • February: the turn. Late February opens the autumn window in warmer years: first tomatoes and beans go in where storms allow.
  • March–April: peak planting. Tomatoes, capsicum, beans, beetroot, carrots, all the leafy greens, first brassicas late in April as nights cool.
  • May–June: the winter garden goes in: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, broad beans, silverbeet, spinach, spring onions, radish, more carrots and lettuce.
  • July: keep succession-planting the winter list; garlic finishes going in; this is the subtropics’ calm, productive season — mild days, few pests, low disease.
  • August: the hinge month. Winter crops still produce while the first warm-season seeds (tomatoes under cover, beans late in the month) start the cycle again.

What this calendar refuses to pretend

No single Australian calendar is honest for the whole country — a Hobart January and a Brisbane January are different planets. Everything above is subtropical; where a crop is marginal we’ve said so rather than listing it anyway. And within the subtropics, fruit fly changes the maths for soft summer fruit: pressure is lowest roughly May to September and highest in the warm, wet months, which is exactly why the calendar leans so hard on autumn and winter.
